Leadership Strategy and Coaching

CEO Coaching

(Founders, Presidents, Partners, Principals) Joan has extensive experience working with CEO’s. You may be a new CEO in transition; your business environment may require you to transform your organization’s culture or refocus to deliver on its mission; you may realize it’s time for you to address personal issues which have prevented you from being a more effective leader.

Typically, Joan will meet with you individually to asses when and how to engage with you, your senior team, and relevant parts of your organization. Together you will devise a strategy to work towards the transformation you want to see in yourself and your organization. Using her expertise in understanding small and large systems, she will identify with you the best leverage points to most effectively lead your organization.

“Joan has provided invaluable support to me over many years as an executive coach, partner in systems thinking, and organizational behavior specialist. She has helped me realize continuous improvement in my CEO leadership practice. To both my corporate work at Microsoft, and to my current focus on philanthropy, she has brought a wealth of expertise in adaptive leadership, organizational systems, and team development. Joan is insightful and quick to comprehend the challenges and opportunities that are faced by C-level executives. I wholeheartedly recommend her.” Jeff Raikes, CEO, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation;
Former President, Microsoft Business Division

Executive Coaching

(Senior Leaders, C-suite, GM’s, VP’s, Directors). Depending on your needs, Joan’s engagement with you can consist exclusively of 1:1 meetings or include significant engagement with your team and your leadership of it. People have sought Joan’s strategic coaching for example, when:

  1. undergoing a transition
  2. scaling up
  3. they want to make personal changes more effectively
  4. there are some chronic issues in their organization and they are willing to identify their part and fix it
  5. they know they need to handle conflict better
  6. they want to better manage triggers and hot buttons
  7. they need more political acumen or better capacity to drive change...

Joan will customize the best approach for you and your situation.

“Joan has an unusual ability to help you get to the core of what your blockers and barriers are as a person, and then help you move through them to become a far more effective leader. I couldn’t have been more pleased with her services.” Vice President,

High Potentials

Joan coaches those who have been chosen by their organization to receive special attention to accelerate their development into senior positions. She will help you to identify your areas for growth and to improve what is necessary for you to rise to the next level.

High Performance Team Coaching

(Senior Leadership Teams or Teams led by executives she is coaching) Joan may work through the leader to drive more effective teamwork; or she may directly facilitate team meetings or offsites to break through a challenging issue; or she will include aspects of courses that she teaches, targeting the specific needs of the team to improve their performance.

“Coming out of every conversation with Joan I have a few concrete actions to take that I know will improve my performance. As a facilitator, Joan has been able to give the whole team common approaches and language to use when we are grappling with tough issues that impact our teamwork, and we have successfully used the techniques we learned from Joan to solve many challenges. I am more impactful today as a result of the opportunities I have had to work with Joan over the years and I would recommend her to anyone that wants honest, open and impactful feedback on themselves and their team.” Matt Rossmeissl, General Manager,

Breakthrough Design and Facilitation of Offsites

Too often, leaders decide to take their team offsite without a clear idea of how to ensure they will achieve the results they want. They may spend the whole day in weighted down discussions or throw in an exercise they saw somewhere that they liked but that won’t actually move the dial on what they care about.

Optimize the likelihood you will achieve your goals. When I work with you, we determine – What does success look like for you? Then I design an offsite that will achieve the outcomes you desire.
Examples of possible offsite goals:

  • Move an organization forward on a culture change;
  • Reduce the silos within your business and create understandings, intentions and processes to ensure they will work better together;
  • Expose and resolve conflicts which have been blocking forward progress
  • Get everyone on the same page and pulling in the same direction
  • Increase buy-in and ownership of a major change

Effective offsite design requires expertise and is also a bit of an art.
